I discovered a large bony mass in CJ's neck at approx 4 1/2 months of age. I immediately brought him to my vet and had many blood tests run on him to determine the cause, and all test results came back normal. He was then brought to a veterinary specialist/surgeon, who again tested him before surgery, and all tests were once again normal. The surgeon diagnosed the bony mass as Calcinosis Circumscripta The mass could not be felt unless CJ's head was extended all the way up and tilted back almost to the neck area on his back. It sat upon partially on and adjacent to the jugular and the nerves going to the cervical portion of his spine. CJ had surgery to remove the mass, but only 95% of the bony mass could be removed without risking paralysis or death. His incision went from the bottom of his ear to his collarbone, and as a result, he could not wear a collar or harness for 3 months.

CJ is a very fearful dog- the slightest thing spooks him. He will exhibit inappropriate responses when he feels threatened or stressed. We are working on this with a certified behaviorist.

CJ was diagnosed with UAP in both elbows on 3/2/11 at the age of 14 months. I had begun to hear clicking sounds coming from his elbows when he woke in the morning. I immediately contacted his breeders and asked if any of the pups in the litter had elbow problems and was informed that 3 other littermates had UAP, CJ making 4 out of 6 with UAP. He had surgery to remove both flaps on his elbows on 4/4/11. The surgery took 5 hours. He was treated with stem cells at the same time, to try to help promote faster healing and to try to slow the development of arthritis in his elbows. I do believe the stem cells have aided in his recovery as he has bounced back much more quickly than expected. Casey has shown signs of arthritis as a result of his UAP. It is not problematic at this time, but it will be, in the future.

7/20/11 The bony mass in the neck of Casey James has come back. The vet believes it is a reoccurrence of Calcinosis Circumscripta. We will see the surgeon again, to decide how to proceed. It seems that 50% of al all breeds with Calcinosis Circumscripta are German Shepherds.

I had Casey James tested for EPI as he has digestive issues with loose stools. His test came back normal. He is now on Tylan, daily, which has remedied his digestive issues.

The Calcinosis Circumscripta seeems to have been absorbed by his body. Took him to the surgeon and neither of us felt the mass :)
